Gyarados is a Water- and Flying-type Pokémon with a long blue serpentine body, cream belly plates, white fins and a fierce open mouth. The many overlapping segments make it a rewarding advanced coloring subject. Work along the body in one direction, applying cobalt blue to the outer scales and darker indigo where the coils pass behind one another. Keep the belly pale cream and separate each plate with soft gray shadow. Use white with light blue on the fins, and deep red inside the mouth. Gyarados pages look dramatic rising from stormy waves, curling through clouds or framed by a waterfall. Pale foam and dark navy water create strong depth. Keep background wave lines broader than the body divisions, preventing the patterns from competing.
